Why Smart Women Stay Stuck
Why the women trying hardest are the ones staying stuck
The women I know are not lazy.
They are reading the books. Listening to the podcasts. Going to therapy. Taking the supplements. They are trying really, really hard.
And so many of us are still stuck.
Stuck in the same relationships. The same anxiety. The same patterns with food, work, dating, money, our bodies.
For years I thought the answer was better information. A cleaner protocol. A smarter therapist. The right supplement stack. The next book.
I tried all of it. Years of therapy. Every book on attachment, anxiety, hormones. The functional medicine workups. A stricter diet, harder workouts, more self-help books. You name it, I tried it.
I ate when I was sad. I picked fights in relationships to feel chosen. I chased the impressive job to feel worthy. I overworked to feel valuable. I worked out to shrink my body.
Every one of those patterns was a strategy. A way to manage a feeling I had not yet learned how to feel.
Emotional eating is not about food. It is about a feeling the food helps you not have.
Overworking is not about ambition. It is about what you would have to feel if you stopped moving for long enough to sit with yourself.
Obsessing over the ex is not about the ex. The obsession keeps the door open. Letting him go would mean grieving. Nobody taught us how to feel and sit with pain like that.
The anxiety is not the enemy. The anxiety is information. The body telling you something is unprocessed, unresolved, or unfelt. We have been taught to medicate it. Regulate it. Supplement it away.
We have not been taught to listen to it or to ask what it is trying to tell us.
The wellness industry is treating the fire while the gas is still on. No supplement will heal your hormones if you are contributing to the imbalance every day by suppressing your feelings, eating to self soothe, overexercising, people pleasing, and hitting your vape every time something uncomfortable comes up.
The reason your gut is dysregulated and the reason you keep having the same fights in your relationship and the reason you cannot stop eating after 9pm and the reason you are exhausted no matter how much you sleep are often symptoms of the same thing.
The same protective responses. The same patterns. The same unfelt feelings underneath.
The root of most stuckness is not a lack of knowledge.
It is the patterns silently running our lives. The ones we built when we were eleven years old to keep ourselves safe. The ones no protocol will undo, because protocols do not change patterns. They just play whack-a-mole with the symptoms on the surface.
Patterns change when we learn to sit with the feeling the pattern is protecting us from.
The work is to notice the urge to reach for the thing that makes the feeling stop, and to stay with the feeling instead. Over and over. Until the body learns the feeling is not dangerous. Until the pattern loses its job.
You are not stuck because you lack discipline. You are not stuck because you are not trying hard enough. You are also not going to be stuck forever.
You are stuck because nobody has ever taught you what to do in the moment between the feeling and the reach to escape it.
When we learn to sit in the gap everything starts to shift.
Love,
Annie

The brutal part is that more information often just makes the stuckness more articulate. The shift happens when the pattern stops being interesting and starts being intolerable.
